YubiKey NEO with Fidesmo

The security key that adapts to you

The YubiKey NEO with Fidesmo is a beautiful piece of hardware with a USB interface on one end and a small NFC antenna in the base. Made out of durable plastic it won’t break when dropped. Instead it’ll give away the luxurious sound of a poker chip; that’s how premium the hardware is. However, it is the software of the YubiKey NEO with Fidesmo that is truly marvelous. You can use the pre-installed U2F app to log in to all FIDO alliance U2F supporting services. Among others that means close to effortless two-factor login to your Google account when using Chrome on Windows, Linux, OS X and Android. With the OTP app you can add a hardware security layer to most other services that support two-factor authentication. With the PGP app you can store your private encryption key for all your communication directly on the device. This enables you to encrypt emails, messages and files before sending them to others! With the Bitcoin Wallet Ledger Unplugged app you can keep your Bitcoins safe and pay using Green Bits and Mycelium. The device is also Fidesmo enabled which means that you can install new apps to it, update the installed apps and even develop your own apps!

The YubiKey NEO with Fidesmo is beautiful

At a glance

Don’t worry

Crush- and water-resistant, the YubiKey NEO with Fidesmo is practically indestructible during normal use.

Always with you

Weighing only 3g and attachable to your keychain alongside your house and car keys.

No setup

No client software or drivers need to be installed to use the U2F, PGP, OTP and Bitcoin apps (variant dependent). Add a layer of hardware security to your Google account without any hassle!

There’s an app for that

Extend the functionality of your Yubikey NEO with Fidesmo by installing apps from the Fidesmo card app store. For example you can use the device to store your Bitcoins with the Ledger Unplugged app!

Keep the apps on your YubiKey NEO with Fidesmo fresh by installing updates via the Fidesmo card app store.

Platform thinking

With the YubiKey NEO with Fidesmo and the Fidesmo platform, developing and distributing smart-card apps is a breeze. You’ll never again have to send out hardware just to give your users access to your software!

Made in USA

The hardware is manufactured in USA by Yubico

There’s an app for that

We don’t pretend to know exactly how and for what you want to use your YubiKey NEO with Fidesmo. You might want to use it for two factor authentication. It does that. You might want to use it to keep your bitcoins safe. It does that too.

In the Fidesmo card app store new apps can pop up enabling you to do completely new things. That would never have been possible if we decided today what you can or can’t do with it.

The YubiKey NEO with Fidesmo has updatable software. If a vulnerability is found in the PGP app an update can be issued fixing the problem. Just like with most other products.

Since the device connects with Fidesmo you are always just a tap away from updating to the latest version of any app. Bugs, vulnerabilities and the like happen in software development and therefore being able to update is crucial.

Platform thinking

The YubiKey NEO with Fidesmo is awesome for developers. Do you have an idea for the next big crypto protocol? Do you want to develop a KeePass version for smartcards? The YubiKey NEO with Fidesmo allows you to do just that.

Did you make something really cool? Make it available to the public by uploading it to Fidesmo. Is it groundbreakingly cool? Sell it through Fidesmo!

Hardware comparison between some relevant products

Why is the Fidesmo platform not more open than it is? Why don’t you use default ISD keys?

The Fidesmo platform is as open as we can allow it while still being able to do server side app verifications, staying attractive to commercial services and ensure that our clients can always talk to the chip. You can read more on the subject here: http://about.fidesmo.com/why-doesnt-fidesmo-use-default-isd-keys/

How is the antenna performance?

Because of the small size of the YubiKey NEO with Fidesmo it has worse antenna performance than our cards when communicating over NFC. Positioning of the hardware is thus harder resulting in that lost contact with the device happening more frequently. The Fidesmo app amends these issues by allowing retries as well making all operations idempotent. We have built the open source Nordpol library to help others get as reliable NFC handling as we have and we are actively contributing to the NFC parts of multiple Android apps.

Where is the Fidesmo app store available?

The app is available for devices running Android 4.0.3 and higher. Download it on Google Play Store here: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.fidesmo.sec.android

Can I put my payment cards on it?

No, not yet anyway.

Can I ride in public transit with it?

No, not yet. We are working hard on also enabling the Fidesmo platform for such services and are in deep discussions about pioneering some national standards: ITSO in the UK and VDV in Germany.

Can all apps be installed at the same time?

The devices are storage constrained which is the reason for the OTP app not being pre-installed on the Bitcoin wallet variant. If you want to install OTP on the Bitcoin variant you’ll need to uninstall one of the other apps. You’ll also have to uninstall one of the other apps if you want to install the Bitcoin Wallet on the basic variant.

What is your relationship with Yubico?

We are partners. We think Yubico does awesome hardware and they think we do awesome software.

Is having a device with ‘write access’ really secure?

A secure device such as the Yubico NEO with Fidesmo has a locked down operating system. These parts can not be changed. What can be changed are the apps running on this operating system. These apps are installed using well defined standards. After an app is installed, no external party, not even Fidesmo, can access the contents of the app. What Fidesmo can do is remove the app from the device (which destroys any secure data stored by the app) and install another app or a newer version of the same app. This cannot be done by anybody but Fidesmo.
